The fraction is 3/4.

1Four different questionsThey look alike. They are not. Answer each one.

a)Is 3/4 more or less than 1/2?
b)Write a fraction equal to 3/4 with 8 on the bottom.
c)Write 3/4 as a decimal.
d)What is 3/4 of 20?
Scratch space — work it out here

Challenge. Pick the one you found hardest, cover your answer, and do it again from scratch. Getting the same answer twice is how you know you have it — and testing yourself is worth more than reading it over again.

a)Is 3/4 more or less than 1/2?
more Compare to a benchmark

Half of 4 quarters is 2 quarters. 3 quarters is more than 2, so 3/4 is more than 1/2.

b)Write a fraction equal to 3/4 with 8 on the bottom.
6/8 Equivalence — scale top and bottom together

4 × 2 is 8, so do the same to the top: 3 × 2 is 6. Same point on the line, different name.

c)Write 3/4 as a decimal.
0.75 Convert to hundredths

3/4 is 75/100, and 75 hundredths is written 0.75.

d)What is 3/4 of 20?
15 Fraction of a quantity

A quarter of 20 is 5, so three quarters is 3 × 5 = 15. This one needs a whole to take a fraction OF.

For the grown-up. If they get stuck, work through the first one together, then hand it back. Reading the working aloud is worth more than marking it — feedback that explains is worth several times feedback that only says right or wrong, and the gap is wider in maths than in any other subject.

Why four questions is the whole sheet

A column of twenty subtractions trains the procedure. It cannot train deciding which procedure the question wants, because on a page of subtraction the answer to “what do I do here” is always the same. That decision is where most mistakes on mixed work come from.

So these four questions share one surface — The fraction is 3/4. — and need four different methods. The answer key names the method each one wanted, which is the column to read together afterwards.

The format is Craig Barton's, published as a large open bank at ssddproblems.com. These sets are ours; the idea is his.
