What ROAM is

The Rapid Online Assessment of Math is a free, fast math assessment from the Brain Development & Education Lab at Stanford. It has four parts, and each one measures something different.

Izzi Math is practice, not assessment. It never produces a score, never predicts one, and never replaces ROAM. The link runs one way: if you happen to have a ROAM result, this page can point you at the right practice here.

ROAM is one of several influences on what Izzi Math contains — the topic order comes from Illustrative Mathematics, and the activity designs come from the wider maths education research. You do not need a ROAM score, or any score, to use this site.

The four parts

ALPACA — Core Math

Grade-level math knowledge across counting, place value, operations, and fractions.

Early numberEarly operationsElementary operations

MagPI — Magnitude Processing

The sense of how big a number is — the foundation everything else sits on.

Number comparisonNumber line estimation

ARF — Fact Retrieval

Whether single-digit facts come back instantly, without counting.

Addition factsSubtraction factsMultiplication factsDivision facts

CALF — Calculation Fluency

Running a multi-digit written procedure correctly — carrying, borrowing, long multiplication.

Adding, no carryAdding with carrySubtracting, no borrowSubtracting with borrowMulti-digit ×Multi-digit ÷

Reading the score

ROAM reports a support category. These are the lab's own thresholds and wording.

BandPercentileWhat it meansWhat to do
Needs extra support below the 20th percentileThis skill is likely holding them back from grade-level material.Start below grade level and build the foundation first. Short, frequent sessions.
Developing skill the 20th to 40th percentileBelow average for their age, but growing.Practise this skill directly alongside grade-level work.
Achieved skill above the 40th percentileNot holding them back from grade-level material.Keep it warm with light practice, and push into the next thing.

The lab says "needs extra support" rather than "high risk" on purpose — it names the action to take, not a label for the child. We use the same words.
